ADC theory of operation

The differential voltages at the analog inputs are captured by the rising edge of CLK±. After capturing the input signal the ADC converts the analog voltage to a digital value by comparing the voltage to the internal reference voltage. If the voltage on the negative input (that is, INA–) is higher than the voltage on the positive input (that is, INA+) then the digital output is a negative 2's complement value. If the voltage on the positive input is higher than the voltage on the negative input then the digital output is a positive 2's complement value. Equation 1 can calculate the differential voltage at the input pins from the digital output.

VIN = Code / 2N * VFS
Equation 1.

Where:

  • Code is the signed decimal output code (for example, -2048(12'h800) to +2047(12'h7FF))
  • N is the ADC resolution
  • VFS is the full-scale input voltage of the ADC as specified in the DC Specifications table, including any adjustment performed by programming FS_RANGE

Celine note for ADC resolution

For VFS = 1 V, the ADC resolution is 12 bits, the the LSB (least significant bit) is :

VLSB = VFS / 212 = 1/4096 = 244.140625 μV

ConditionOutput
INA+ > INA−Positive 2's complement code (0 to +2047)
INA− > INA+Negative 2's complement code (−2048 to 0)
INA+ = INA−Code = 0

1. Positive 2's complement code (0 to +2047)

  • positive full-scale +2047 (0x7FF)
    • Code = +2047 (12'h7FF)
    • VIN = (2047/4096) * 1V = 0.499755859375 V ≈ 0.5 V

2. Negative 2's complement code (−2048 to 0)

  • negative full-scale -2048 (0x800)

    • Code = -2048 (12'h800)
      • 12'h800 = 12'b1000 0000 0000 0000 = (-1) * 211 = -2048
    • VIN = (−2048/4096) * 1V = −0.5 V
  • any other negative code

    • Code = -2033(12'h80F)

      • 12'h80F = 12'b1000 0000 1111 = (-1) * 211 + 23 + 22 + 21 + 20 = -2033
    • VIN = (−2033/4096) * 1V = -0.496337890625 V

    • Code = -1 (12'hFFF)

      • 12'hFFF = 12'b1111 1111 1111 1111 = (-1) * 211 + 210 + 29 + 28 + 27 + 26 + 25 + 24 + 23 + 22 + 21 + 20 = -1
    • VIN = (−1/4096) * 1V = -0.000244140625 V

Reframed code as (sign digit(MSB) + absolute value) to make sure the code don't use the 2's complement code.
Then the normalization for negtive code can be done in the same way as positive code except the sign digit is inverted.
